HOST FAMILY EXPERIENCE

Research – Internships – Testimonials

Cultural Immersion

Living with an Ecuadorian family provides students with an authentic and deeply enriching experience. This opportunity not only improves their Spanish language skills through real-world use, but also allows them to gain a profound understanding of the culture, values, and traditions of Andean communities within their social, political, and cultural context.

Immersion fosters genuine integration, turning students into active members of the family as they participate in daily activities and celebrations. This not only enriches their learning but also creates meaningful bonds of friendship and affection that often last long beyond the academic program.

Research – Internships

Work in public, private, or community organizations is a crucial component of intercultural study programs, as it allows students to understand and value cultural differences and worldviews, Individual Projects or Internships Students are supported in developing participatory research and community service projects, often within non-governmental organizations. During internships, students are expected to combine their field observations with theory to produce a comprehensive report on Ecuadorian realities, guided by three academic seminars that strengthen their research methodology and techniques.

Testimonials

Each experience represents an opportunity for learning, growth, and connection with inspiring communities. Through various programs —from microfinance and environmental initiatives to health and development projects— our volunteers share how these experiences transformed their worldview and strengthened their professional and personal development.

“I learned a great deal about collaboration and how to work under the supervision of others in a professional, humble, and competent manner. This was a valuable opportunity to apply my knowledge as a journalism student to the specific needs of a nonprofit organization while learning about microfinance, development, and professional training methods for economically disadvantaged individuals.”

Microfinance
“What a great experience! The first week at the hospital was challenging because I had little supervision or direction. I didn’t know exactly what I was supposed to do or how I could help. However, after observing how the hospital operates and becoming familiar with the staff, I learned that all I had to do was ask questions. If I wanted to spend time in gynecology or internal medicine, there was no problem. All the doctors and nurses I worked with were very receptive and willing to help me learn. I am grateful to have been responsible for the success of my internship, as I grew personally and professionally by taking initiative. I feel that I gained a comprehensive understanding of the different aspects of the hospital because I had few restrictions and plenty of freedom to observe and assist.”

Health
“I would highly recommend this internship to students interested in environmental issues, nutrition, education, or cultural studies. There is a wide variety of opportunities to participate and learn about many aspects of this community. Community leaders are extremely knowledgeable and inspiring, and there are numerous ongoing and new projects aimed at sustainably improving the lives of community leaders. Wayra Churi offers a unique chance to live with the very community you work with. For me, this was a truly powerful experience that allowed me to fully immerse myself in the community and gain a deeper understanding of how I could contribute to the projects.”
Courtney Columbus.
Environment
“I learned a tremendous amount during this internship and highly recommend it to future students. This experience is suited for any student interested in medical practice. There are three different types of treatments to learn about, and generally, each department is very open to allowing you to observe and learn about their practices.”
